Winter Sleep (Nuri Bilge Ceylan) The winner of the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Festival, this Turkish film about a failed marriage has all the makings of a fairy tale. The Homesman (Tommy Lee Jones) Tommy Lee Jones directs and stars in this 19th century western, which sees him accompany Hilary Swank and three mad women across the Nebraskan plains to Iowa.

Boyhood (Richard Linklater) Filmed over 12 years to show the ageing of a six-year-old boy in real time, Richard Linklater's Boyhood is an astonishing achievement. Cold in July (Jim Mickle) The fourth film from director Jim Mickle and his regular co-writer Frank Damici, Cold in July exudes seedy charm as it falls into the world of organised crime and police corruption after Michael C Hall's Richard Dane accidentally shoots a petty criminal. Belle (Amma Asante) Gugu Mbatha-Raw hints at stardom in this biopic of historic figure Dido Elizabeth Belle.

Amma Asante's film is based on the life of the illegitimate daughter of a British naval officer and his African mistress in the late 18th century. Fruitvale Station (Ryan Coogler) This emotionally wrenching film based on the shooting of 22-year-old black father Oscar Grant showcases the talent of its star Michael B Jordan and was a hit at last year's Sundance festival. 22 Jump Street (Phil Lord, Christopher Miller) The sequel to the highly successful 21 Jump Street uses the “Same plot.

Tracks (John Curran) Set in the Australian outback, this achingly beautiful account of Robyn Davidson's 1,700-mile walk towards the Indian Ocean stars Mia Wasikowska and Adam Driver. Exhibition (Joanna Hogg) This fascinating drama follows a couple as they prepare to move out of their home in west London. (Lukas Moodysson) Gloriously funny Swedish comedy from Lukas Moodysson, based on the graphic novel drawn by his wife and following three 13-year-old girls who start a punk-rock group. A Story of Children and Film (Mark Cousins) Mark Cousins' vivid history of children in front of the camera is a joy.
